Class 3: Hornby Small Wheel Saloons

Description:

Scalextric 1/32 saloon and hatchback cars from the 1970s and 1980s using the smaller diameter ‘Superslix’ hubs.

Regulations:

No modifications permitted from OEM specification except free choice of guide provided that no chassis modifications are required for fitment. Both OEM Johnson and Mabuchi motors permitted. Car may be repainted. Tyres may be replaced with Ortmann or other modern rubber tyres.

Datsun 260Z, Ford Capri, Ford Escort Mexico, Ford Escort XR3i, MG Maestro, MG Metro 6R4, MG Metro Turbo, Mini-Cooper, Mini 1275GT

Driver’s View:

Something of a Marmite class, back in the 1970s these small wheel cars were always trickier to drive than the large wheel saloons like the BMW 3.0 CSL. Patience is rewarded more often than trying to out-brake your rivals or stand on the gas at the exit of the bend. It’s a challenge to complete 10 laps but with subjects like the Ford Capri and Escort XR3i these were the cool kids’ favourites back in the day…
